Schools on 48-hr Tests, Masks, & Closed Mgmt to Start Year

Over the weekend Beijing Education News, the official WeChat channel of the Beijing Education Committeeannounced that students and staff need to be in Beijing for 7 days prior to returning to campus. Yesterday (Aug 22) Beijing Youth Daily reported more details on the specifics of exactly how back-to-school will be carried out this year.

During yesterday's Prevention and Control Work Press Conference, spokesperson for the Beijing Municipal Government Xu Hejian, announced that Beijing is expected to face its largest group of returnees, and in an effort to prevent imported and domestic cases, students' back-to-school Covid-19 policies will remain largely the same as the spring.

Beijing's primary and secondary schools and kindergartens will be welcoming their students back as scheduled.

Higher education institutions (including vocational schools) however will
need to organize their students' return to school in stages and batches. The specifics of each university are still yet to be determined.

Primary and secondary schools have been asked to operate under closed management and staff and students must continue to wear masks on campus except during outdoor sports activities.

Beijing Youth Daily also reiterated that teachers, staff, and students must be in Beijing for a minimum of 7 days and conduct daily health monitoring prior to returning to campus. Teachers and students who are currently in high-risk areas will not be allowed to return to Beijing for the time being. Once they are allowed to return, they must also undergo 7 days of self-health monitoring before returning to campus.

Lastly, everyone will need to present a negative Covid test that is no older than 48 hours before returning to campus. And, unlike the rest of the city which largely requires a 72-hour Covid test to enter, schools will be requiring 48-hour Covid tests for at least the first 7 days back.
